SM Mall of Asia, Manila Bay area-- the 2nd Philippine International PyroMusical Competition held its 4th week of competition yesterday, March 5th, 2011, between Japan and Canada, 2 of 10 competing countries in this year's PyroMusical Competition.
We were supposed to go to the event as early as last week, Feb 26, to see China and France battle it out for fireworks-display supremacy, but we were unable to because
Lakwatsera, failed to inform me that we had to be there by 7pm. Finally, yesterday, we were able to go the the event--still-- not by 7pm, but at least, early enough to catch the fireworks exhibition before it was over.
It was already 7pm, and we were still ouside the MOA area, caught up in traffic. From afar, Lakwatsera and I saw fireworks display light up the starless sky. Japan has started its exhibition! I thought traffic would be better once inside the MOA area. It was worse. Japan's fireworks display was almost over when we finally reached the bay area. Lots of people watched it for free from behind the perimeter fence. We heard a lot of oooohs and aaaaahs from the crowd as we witnessed the closing minutes of Japan's fireworks exhibition. Japan appears to have been making quite a show base on the crowd's reactions, long before we've arrived.

The view from outside the fence was not bad, and so Lakwatsera and I had second thoughts on entering and paying an entrance fee. But we eventually decided to buy tickets for a slightly better vantage point.Japan' s fireworks show was officially over when we entered the gates. The person who ushered us in said " Bakit ngayon lang kayo?Sayang di n'yo inabutan 'yung Japan ang ganda pa naman."
That's okay, I thought. Canada will blow us away. We waited close to an hour before Canada's fireworks exhibition kicked off. Lakwatsera took care of all the pictures. I concentrated on the show which unfortunately, did not blow me away. Now, I regret that we didn't come early so we could have seen Japan's exhibition from start to finish. Canada's fireworks, unfortunately, I've already seen on too many New Year's Eve celebrations.
The PyroMusical competition is not just about amazing colorful fireworks. The fireworks display is choreographed and synchronized to the competing countries' chosen song or music. The more synchronized, the better. That is why, although you can view the fireworks display from behind the gated area, it is still better to purchase a ticket so you can hear the music while watching the fireworks display. It gives an added and deeper dimension to the show.
So far, 8 competing countries have performed: South Korea, Spain (which I heard was really good), Portugal, United Kingdom( the depending champion), China, France, and yesterday, Japan, and Canada.
Last day of competition will be on March 12, between Australia and the Philippines.
